What They Said: Newport is the third largest city in Wales with a population of 138,800. The Friars Walk development is an investement of £60m in the city and will provide a completely new shopping and leisure experience for the region.

There will be a wide selection of retailers and a three-level department store, plenty of new restaurants, an eight-screen cinema, car parking for approximately 335 cars and an adjoining multi-storey car park operated by the Kingsway Centre providing a further 1050 spaces.

An important element of the development is the re-establishment of physical and visual links between the town centre and river including the new pedestrian bridge over the river, which aligns with Llanarth Street and the University.

This major development will also create dynamic new public squares and civic spaces and attractive and accessible spaces that are safe, well designed and contemporary to reflect the ambition of the city. It will also incorporate trees and landscaping into the built environment.

The devlopment site currently house the bus station for the centre of Newport. This bus station is being part relocated off site at Market Square to accommodate national routes. However the requirement for a bus interchange on the site remains in the form of a new interchange for local routes. This is located at the junction of Kingsway West and Corn Street with the provision of 16 bus bays and supporting office and staff accommodation.

The development is designed to achieve a BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent’ for the use of energy.

BREEAM is the world’s foremost environmental assessment method and rating system for buildings. It sets the standard for best practice in sustainable building design, construction and operation and uses recognised measures of performance which are set against established benchmarks to evaluate a building – these represent a broad range of categories from energy to ecology. They include aspects related to energy and water use, the internal environment (health and well-being), pollution, transport, materials, waste, ecology and management process.
